Gergely fell in love with New York. From the minute he set foot on the island of Manhattan he was intoxicated by its buildings, skylines, bridges and bustle. This love is evident in his sophisticated and charming glimpses of the city he called his American home.
The “New York City” collection was done in the 1950‘s. We think you’ll agree - from his images of Times Square, the Brooklyn Bridge, Trinity Church, Battery Park, the 59th Street Bridge and so much more - Gergely “got” mid-century Manhattan in a way that few other artists ever did, before or since.
(Using Google Earth to search for his perspective while painting “The Battery” suggests that Gergely was perched atop the Staten Island Ferry Terminal. To paint “Times Square” he rented a hotel room for the day for that sole purpose. Where he stood to create “Under the Brooklyn Bridge, “59th Street Bridge,” “Wall Street” and others is anybody’ s guess and part of the fun of this collection.)
